A romantic rendezvous across the dance floor led to 60 years of marriage for a Hillmorton couple.

James and Marjorie Smith married on a cold, damp day on April 3, 1954.

They tied the knot at St Margaret’s Church in Whitnash, near Leamington.

Better known as Jim, 81, and Madge, 80, the couple met at Pally Dance Hall on a Saturday night in Leamington.

“We had three bridesmaids who are Jim’s sisters,” said Madge.

“They wore pink, blue and mauve which was quite unusual back then.”

Their wedding car was an Austin 7.

Madge said: “I remember it was like a box!

“But it got me to the church on time.”

Madge worked at the Regent Hotel in Leamington and Jim had just finished his national service in 1952. She then went on to work for Rugby Borough Council and her husband worked at a building firm before also joining the council for many years.

They have six children - Steven, Anne, Jennifer, David, Robert, Andrew - as well as 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The diamond couple are having a meal to celebrate, with all the family including the three bridesmaids.

They agreed: “The secret to a long-lasting marriage is loving each other no matter what.

“Stick together through the good times and the bad.”

They both used to play darts for local teams and Jim enjoyed fishing.

The couple love gardening and enjoy spending time at their allotment. Madge added: “It doesn’t feel like 60 years - it’s quite a milestone.”

Celebrations will take place at The Bell pub in Hillmorton.
