Nearly 1,300 were breathalysed during the month-long campaign which ended on New Year’s Day.

Thirty people were charged with drink-driving related offences and 13 were on police bail pending the results of blood tests.

Some of those breath tested were caught in the morning with high alcohol levels after a night’s drinking.

The pensioner from Derbyshire was arrested after a collision in Rugby.

And a Rugby man aged 19 spent a chunk of Christmas Day in the cells after failing a breath test following a crash.

Meanwhile a 44-year-old Nuneaton woman stopped by police was nearly five times over the legal limit.

Sgt Kate Jackson said: “Everyone’s metabolism dealing with alcohol is different, so the only safe way to know you are not driving under the influence of alcohol is not to drink and drive.

“We chose to make the checks at different locations and differing times.

“Although the campaign has finished, police will continue to enforce the message of the dangers of drinking and driving throughout the year.”
