Fire crews praised for swift action after Southam blaze

Fire Crews from across the county have been thanked for their swift action at a fire on an industrial estate in Southam yesterday (Monday).

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service received the call to a fire at unit 9 on Westfield Road in Southam at 12.16pm yesterday.

On arrival crews found one unit well alight.

There was a lot of thick black smoke coming from the unit and fire crews were quick to act to get the fire under control and stop it spreading to the units either side.

At the height of the incident five appliances were in attendance along with the combined aerial rescue pump.

The unit where the fire originated has been completely destroyed, however, thanks to the work of the crews, the units either side suffered minimal fire and smoke damage and have been able to open today.

Talking about the incident, Station Commander, John Wilson said: “When we arrived at the incident the unit was well alight with thick smoke coming through the roof of the building. “Our crews were quick to assess the situation and tackle the fire to stop it spreading to any of the adjacent units.

“Thanks to their swift response and assertive firefighting actions, the units either side were saved and have been able to open today.

“Luckily all of the units had been safely evacuated before the fire took hold. The probable cause of the fire was a heating system used within the premise.”
