Developers have submitted an application for five new retail units at Junction One retail park.

If approved, they would be sited between Frankie and Benny’s restaurant and the east side of the Junction One retail park by the Black Path. They would be smaller retail units than the larger ones opposite, which include The Range, Boots and Virgin Active.

Planning permission is also being sought to change the use of Rugby’s Superbowl from leisure to retail, however, the senior management at Superbowl has said it had no plans to close the business.

Three of the new retail units will be the new homes of Carpetright, Pets at Home and Brantano, which will leave Elliott’s Field as it moves towards a more fashion-led range of shops.

As it’s unknown who the new occupying retailers may be, and developers aren’t sure on how many jobs could be created.

A statement from Indigo Planning Ltd said: “The new retail units will create a significant number of new jobs in Rugby, in a ward with an unemployment rate higher than the national and regional averages.”

Indigo Planning Ltd added: “Some of the large-format retailers currently at Elliotts Field Retail Park will be displaced by the new development but may wish to remain trading in the area.

“If high quality accommodation is not provided for their relocation it is highly likely that Rugby will lose them. This will exacerbate the existing levels of expenditure leakage to destinations outside of the Borough.

“The proposal will increase consumer choice, retain expenditure which otherwise will be lost to other towns.”

Last month, different developers also applied for permission to extend the Clock Towers shopping centre onto the former Gala Bingo site and revamp the existing malls in a £25m project.
