THE civic funeral of former Rugby Mayor Gordon Collett will take place next Tuesday at 11.30am at St Peter’s church in Dunchurch.

Mr Collett, who spent 34 years on the borough council, was mayor in 1977-78 and leader from 1978-87 and 1989-95. He died aged 81 of cancer on Sunday November 4.

Mark Pawsey MP led the tributes to Mr Collett last week. He said: “I was very sad to hear the news about Gordon. It came as a shock. I was very involved with Gordon on several local politics issues and we have a lot to be grateful to him for. It’s a great sadness.”

Mr Collett, who was also a Warwickshire county councillor, is chiefly remembered as one of the forerunners who fought off plans to build an airport near two Rugby villages.

When Mr Collett stepped down from his borough council role in May 2007 he said: “It has been an extraordinary experience. I took on the role of councillor in 1973 to help ensure that people living in rural parishes get a fair crack of the whip, and I hope that I have achieved that.”
