A former school teacher celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday (Thursday).

Kathleen Ellison, who lives at Abbeyfields’ Jim Gillespie House in Dunchurch Road, Rugby, taught at several schools in the area.

She grew up in Gilfach Goch, a small village near Bridgend in Glamorgan, South Wales. Kathleen completed her teacher training at St Mary’s College in Cheltenham and moved to Rugby in 1939 to gain more teaching experience.

Kathleen married her husband Henry when she was 27 and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, and two granddaughters, Caroline Anne and Judith Helen.

When asked the secret to a long life, Kathleen said: “Respect and care for your body as it deserves it and take note of any problems at an early stage.”
