Free swimming on the agenda again

FREE swimming for under-16s and over-60s will be scrapped next year but efforts will be made to fund lessons for non-swimming youngsters.

Programmes started in April last year but government funding for the projects was withdrawn in July leaving Warwick District Council with a possible £159,000 bill to continue provision for another year.

The council is now considering the possibility of providing free swimming lessons for non-swimmers aged between 11 and under-16 in the next financial year.

Speaking at a council executive meeting on Wednesday, Cllr Bill Gifford (Lib Dem, Leamington Milverton) said: “It could be considered as a safety and a health aspect.

“It would be slightly different from free swimming but it would go to the people who really need it.”
