Full steam ahead for Draycote cycle path

Plans have been set in motion to create a cycle path and pedestrian walkway leading to Draycote Water.

Paul Hayden-Hart, who lives in Long Lawford, has spent the past few years clearing Rugby’s old railway line from Henry Hinde Junior School to Potford’s Dam with help from a group of volunteers.

Mr Hayden-Hart said: “We are now planning on pushing down to pick up the National Cycle Network route 41 at Draycote village.

“This will mean that anyone who lives near to the Western Relief Road, or has a cycle path that leads to it, will have traffic-free access to Draycote Water.

“Just off the top of my head, this includes the town centre, New Bilton, Newbold, Long Lawford, Admirals, Brownsover, Cawston and Bilton. The path needs a lot of clearance by Whitefields Golf Club and a bit of work where it passes under the A45, but other than that it is pretty clear.

“I am just putting it out there and looking for people who want to get involved with this exciting project.”

After posting about the idea online, Paul was overwhelmed with responses from Rugby residents offering their time and services to the cause. He said: “I feel very encouraged with all the positive responses and it pushes me on to make it happen.”

The first working day on the cycle path will take place on Sunday, September 11 from 1.30pm. Volunteers should meet on the Draycote end of the site to help clear the area by Whitefields Golf Club.
