Trading standards officers are urging people in Rugby to take advantage of a free electric blanket safety tests as autumn approaches.
People aged 50 or over can receive free checks at Rugby library on Monday September 29.
Testing is by appointment only. There are limited appointments which are allocated on a first come first served basis. Up to two blankets per person can be tested.
Cllr Les Caborn, the county councillor responsible for community safety, said: “Unsafe electric blankets are the cause of many house fires each year and can often lead to death or serious injury. Older people are particularly affected. I strongly urge Warwickshire residents to take advantage of this service.”
Cllr Richard Chattaway, chairman of the council’s overview and scrutiny committee, added: “As a County Council we are committed to keeping people safe and protected from harm and our Trading Standards Service is helping support this goal by ridding Warwickshire of dangerous and unsafe electrical blankets.”
Although electric blankets are manufactured to strict standards, wear and tear can leave them more vulnerable to developing a fault and faulty electric blankets can catch fire and cause harm.
To book an appointment, call the Trading Standards Service on 01926 414016 (Monday to Friday) or email firstname.lastname@example.org
