Guides do their bit for community

GIRL Guides have done their best to clean up one of Leamington’s busiest parks.

The 11th Leamington Guides, based at Dale Street Methodist church, were horrified at the amount of litter they saw while on a walk through the Pump Round Gardens for the Queen’s recent Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Some of the piles of rubbish had been left next to litter bins.

The youngsters borrowed litter pickers and gloves from Warwick District Council and, joined by unit helper Sue Mountford and Guider Penny Sharples they braved the wind and rain to clear away as much of the rubbish as possible.

Mrs Mountford said: “They were so shocked by the amount of litter and we just ran with it from there because that’s what Guides do.

“They’re a lovely bunch of girls and the idea is for them to always have fun but to also do things to help people in their community.

“We are always looking for new members to join us and new leaders. They don’t have to be former guides or guiders and they don’t have to commit to every week but they do have to be CRB checked.”

The group meets at the church on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 8pm and has about 20 members.
