Has Warwick won its place in record books?

Swan Street in Warwick was awash with morris men and women last weekend as 138 dancers - plus the town mayor - had a go at setting a new Guinness Book of Records.
Morris dancers from throughout the county were gathering throughout Warwick on Saturday and at 3pm they attempted a Guinness Book of Records world record attempt for the biggest number of dancers. Cllr Bob Dhillon only joined in for the last 48 seconds after it became clear the five minute record had been set by 15 morris sides all dancing together.

Allen Smith, the squire of the town’s own Plum Jerkum side, said: “When we completed our record attempt the cheering from the crowds was so loud I thought it would smash windows.

“It was a fantastic day with us dancing in the square, in the castle courtyard, and just about everywhere else before we gathered for our world record attempt at 3pm.”

The current record is 88 morris dancers stepping out together in Moreton in Marsh back in 1999.

This time videos were taken and the mayor, along with Kenilworth councillor Dave Shilton, agreed to act as official witnesses to the attempt...although it could be eight to 12 weeks before the teams receive official confirmation of any place in the next record books.

Local support came from Chinewrde in Kenilworth plus sides from Harbury and Stratford.
