Hayley’s cycle challenge from the back streets of Jaipur to the Taj Mahal

A LEAMINGTON cyclist is taking on the challenge of a lifetime by riding across India all in the aid of charity.

Hayley Grainger will cover a total of 400km over five consecutive days in the hope of raising money for the charity Acorns Chidren’s Hospice.

Hayley will begin her arduous journey this time next year in Jaipur and will make her way through back streets, small villages and desert landscapes before reaching the finish line in Agra, home of the world-famous Taj Mahal.

And Hayley, who already has a long-distance cycle challenge under her belt, is excited to experience the sights and sounds of a country she has never visited before.

“I really enjoy cycling and took part in a London to Paris cycle challenge in July and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience,” said the 27-year-old. “Now I’m ready to use my previous training to help me take on this new and exciting challenge.

“I’m the only member of my family who has not visited India so I’m excited to see the country for myself and especially see the parts that are quite far from the typical tourist areas.

“I’ve begun raising money already and have raised almost £500 so far. We’re also looking at hosting some events next summer after the success of our jubilee ones this year.”

The charity currently cares for over 630 children and 880 families in the heart of England with costs of £7,500 per day needed to run each of their three hospices in Birmingham, Walsall and Worcester.

Acorns treks and challenges officer Lucy Shepherd is delighted Hayley is braving the Indian heat to help the charity who rely on donations for the majority of their income.

“It’s fantastic that Hayley has got involved again,” she said.

“The India Cycle Challenge is both physically and emotionally demanding but participants will be rewarded with a once in a lifetime opportunity and a sense of achievement.

“We’d love more people to sign up and help us continue to give vital support to local life-threatened children.”
