The Benn Partnership Centre on Railway Terrace became a drop-off point for donations of toys, clothes and household goods for the family, who were devastated by a fire at their home on Wentworth Road.

The centre launched its appeal on Friday November 16 after being in touch with the family and figuring out their needs.

But the centre was overwhelmed by the volume of donations which came in early on Saturday, leading them to ask for a temporary halt on Monday.

A spokesperson praised the ‘heartening’ response of Rugbeians, stating the centre had been busy over the weekend and 12 people had come in on Monday morning to donate, with 12 more calling to ask if more donations were needed.

Then on Wednesday morning a spokesperson for the centre said: “We have been through everything now and we’ve got a better idea of what the family needs.”

The centre is now asking for donations of kitchenware, bathroom items (like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes etc.) and general household items like vacuum cleaners and mops.

The spokesperson said the centre has received some items of furniture, and asked that anyone wishing to donate more furniture calls beforehand.

Could you offer storage space for donated goods?

The centre is also reaching out to any local warehouse owners who could help to store donated furniture.

You can reach the centre on 01788 553033.
