Soda, a Piebald mare pony slipped off the towpath and into the Grand Union Canal on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the rider being unhurt and able to climb onto the towpath to safety, Soda was left stuck in the water and fire crews from Leamington and the Animal Rescue Unit from Rugby were called to help get her to safety.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The rider suffered no injuries, however Soda was unable to get out of the water on her own and it is thanks to the rider’s quick response and with the help of crews, Soda was safely pulled out of the water by a harness.

“This is just one of the ways we are working to help keep our residents and animals of Warwickshire safe.”
