Hundreds of runners turned out for the Ready Steady Fun Run in Rugby.

More than 400 runners entered Sunday’s 5K run organised by Rugby & Northampton Athletics Club.

Organisers Ruth Waugh and Kay Shaw, who also run the successful Ladies’ Running Group Section of R&N AC, were delighted with the turn out.

They said: “We started the event seven years ago as a target 5K for our ladies’ beginners’ group. To see it grow year on year into a fun family event for the whole community is fantastic and a huge thank you to our organising committee, sponsors and all the volunteers who give their time to ensure the event runs smoothly.”

Although the emphasis is on fun, the pace at the front of the field was flat out from the start. Elisha DeMello, 20, stormed around the 5K breaking the course record to finish 1st in 16 minutes and 16 seconds, followed by veteran Gary Wallace (17:30) and Daniel McKeown (18:01). The women’s race was won by Sharon Fearn (22:23) with Helen Farrow setting a new pb in second (23.32) and Karen Stanhope who has run all seven RSFR’s in 3rd 23:57). Junior races were won by Joe Musgrove and Neve Satchwell.

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey presented the winners with their medals.
