A Labour councillor has received an award acknowledging his services to education, tax and health.

Cllr Jim Shera, who represents the Benn ward at Rugby Borough Council, has received the distinguished Formanite Award for his services to education, health and taxation from the Forman Christian College (FCC) in Pakistan.

Cllr Shera said he was delighted to have received the award having been a former student at the college more than 40 years ago.

He said: “This award is very dear to me and the recognition from my previous college makes it even more special.

“This award is only given to very few people and I am truly honoured that they thought of me.

“The FCC is one of the original colleges founded in the Indian sub-continent and run by the Church.”

Cllr Shera was Mayor of Rugby in 1988 and had a road in the town named after him in 2009.

The dedicated councillor has received several distinguished awards throughout his political career.

Cllr Shera came to Rugby from Gujranwala, Pakistan, in 1971.
