Jazzing up Rugby

WHAT IS IT? Rugby Jazz

WHERE AND WHEN IS IT? From Saturday November 24

First there was Rugby Roots and now there’s Rugby Jazz. Local entrepreneur Chris French has teamed up with Rugby Roots’ Richard Barnes to organise a new series of jazz nights, commencing on Saturday November 24 with a concert at Lawrence Sheriff School by fast-rising singing star Zara McFarlane.

Chris said: “I’d been to some Rugby Roots gigs and thoroughly enjoyed the top quality performers and the friendly atmosphere, so when I invited Zara McFarlane to appear in Rugby I approached Richard for some advice and much to my delight he was happy to help and get involved, which I’m very grateful for.”

Zara McFarlane has won critical acclaim for her debut album Until Tomorrow, and has already graced the stage at Ronnie Scott’s in London and at several prestigious jazz festivals in the UK and Europe.

The 28-year-old London vocalist has also made a string of impressive appearances with musicians who do not choose their collaborators without careful consideration – Denys Baptiste, Orphy Robinson, Soweto Kinch and Jazz Jamaica All Stars to name but some.

Chris added: “I think it’s great for Rugby that enthusiastic people running events and venues such as Rugby Roots and The Vault are bringing some great new music to the town – and I hope Rugby Jazz can be part of this success”.

Tickets (£10) for Zara McFarlane are already on sale at www.rugbyroots.com, and from Sounds in Church Street. For more information, call 07855 463 934.
