Lillington primary school expansion gets the green light

PLANS to spend more than £1.25 million to double the capacity of Lillington Nursery and Primary School have been given the go-ahead.

Members of Warwickshire County Council’s cabinet approved the proposal at a meeting last Thursday.

The expansion will increase the number of new places at the school from 30 to 60 from September next year.

The school currently has 161 pupils across all years and a capacity for 210 but it could eventually accommodate up to 420.

Cllr Heather Timms, the councillor who is responsible for policy on child safeguarding, early intervention and schools, said a “notable increase” in birth rates across the county, including Leamington, was the reason for the proposal.

She added: “Rising birth rates are forecast to continue, so it’s necessary to take measures to ensure we will be able to meet our legal obligation to provide sufficient school places in the town.

“Of the schools in the area, Lillington was considered most appropriate for expansion.”

There will be no change in the capacity of the school’s nursery which currently has 22 children and a limit of 36.
