Eastlands School staff

These ladies were all members of staff at Eastlands School. It’s possible the picture was taken in 1982, the year that Janet Bass (third from the left on the front row) retired. Her son Jon has shared it with us and can name a few of her colleagues. Next to Janet in the middle of the front row is headmistress Margaret Jackson. Second from the right on the front row is Doreen Hart. On the very left of the back row is Brenda Williams and second from right is Pat Whitfield.

Having raised a family of four after the war, in 1965 Janet was offered a job as a classroom assistant by the then headmaster Kenneth Hardcastle, who went on to become an inspector of schools. A few people might also remember Janet from when her parents ran a grocery and off licence in Claremont Road during the Second World War and she dished out rations from the age of 16 to at least 24.
