Lorry driver repeatedly attacked during '˜nasty' Rugby robbery

A lorry driver was repeatedly attacked with what is believed to be a crowbar during a violent robbery in Rugby early yesterday morning (Tuesday November 1).

At approximately 12.50am, a lorry was parked at the roadside on Castle Mound Way when the driver heard a noise coming from the back of his vehicle.

As he got out of his cab to investigate, he found that two men had broken into the trailer and were in the process of stealing the load.

The driver, a man in his 30s, challenged the men and was then hit on the head with an object, believed to be a crowbar.

As the driver attempted to climb back into his cab, he was assaulted with an unknown sharp object, which injured his hand.

He was then hit on his legs and ankle with the item believed to be a crowbar, which caused serious bruising.

The suspects stole a small quantity of cash from the victim and damaged his mobile phone. They then left in a vehicle in the direction of the A426.

One of the suspects is described as being approximately 5’5” and was believed to be wearing a ski mask.

The other suspect is described as a white man, approximately 5’7” to 5’9” tall and of an athletic build.

He was believed to be clean shaven and was dressed entirely in black with a high-vis jacket over his top. He is also described as having a black fabric bag hanging from his neck by a strap.

The incident lasted for about 20 minutes.

Police staff investigator Andy Holloway from Rugby CID said: “This was a nasty incident that was very distressing for the victim.

“We are still trying to piece together exactly what happened and would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please come forward.”
