A lorry carrying a large quantity of rubber and tyres caught fire just before 5:30am between junction 2 and 1 of the M6 towards Rugby on the southbound carriageway, causing long delays.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service sent out two fire engines and firefighters arrived to find the articulated lorry burning on the hard shoulder of the motorway, after which more fire engines were called for.

The southbound lane has been closed between junction 2 and 1, and traffic has been diverted via the M69 and the A5.

It is unknown how long the firefighters will take to tackle the fire.
