Part of the M1 south of Rugby will close this evening for essential works to be carried out.

Highways England is warning drivers that the M1 will be closed southbound between junction 18 for Crick and junction 16 for Northampton from 9pm until 6am.

The closure will also include the M45 entry slip road.

Highways said it is closing the motorway to allow for ‘essential work’ to be carried out as part of the Smart Motorway project which is set to be completed by Spring 2017.

Preliminary works are being carried out on the verge including draining, surveys, site clearance and installing specialist fencing.

There will also be a closure on Thursday night (November 26) from junction 19 to 18 southbound.

Highways advise to add an extra 15 minutes onto your journey and to follow the diversion signs.
