Magical melting pot of cultures in Rugby High School play

Rugby High School breathes new life into a much loved play for its annual school production.

Visitors to the school are invited to an amateur production of Dominic Cook’s Arabian Nights, by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.

Catherine Mason, head of drama, said: “In the play, Shahrazad must tell a story every evening in order to save her life and the lives of thousands of women. So each tale must entertain the King, but it must also teach him something about himself so that his heart will soften and he will learn the error of his ways. At the heart of this story, is not only the power of storytelling, but the power of a woman’s voice.

“The tales are wonderful because they are a magical melting pot of cultures, ethnicities and beliefs. They celebrate diversity, and no matter who you are – young or old, male or female, poor or rich, Christian or Muslim – you can be the evil wrong-doer or the heroic saviour.

“It feels absolutely right that we are staging ‘Arabian Nights’ in 2018, and we hope that the production also celebrates all that is wonderful about our multi-cultural country.

“With an enormous cast, we aim to breathe fresh life into these stories with music, puppetry, physical theatre, and much much more! So follow us, through the portals of each story - ‘Arabian Nights’ will be performed for three nights only at Rugby High School from today (Wednesday) to November 30, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 (£4 for concessions) and are available at from the foyer from 1pm every lunchtime in the school reception and on the door every evening.
