A man is fighting for his life today (Thursday) and another man has been arrested by police after a serious crash on the M1 in South Leicestershire yesterday evening (Wednesday).

At least five cars were involved in the multi-vehicle crash between the junction 20 Lutterworth turn-off and junction 21 Leicester turn-off, Leicestershire Police said.

And both lanes of the busy motorway were shut for many hours after the collision happened just before 6.30pm - sparking traffic chaos as police and ambulances raced to the scene.

Detectives from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are today stepping up their enquiries into the huge incident.

A number of vehicles – including a BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, Skoda Octavia, Ford Mondeo and a Renault lorry – were involved in the accident.

One man in his 30s was rushed to the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

The casualty, who hasn’t been named, is in a “serious condition” today, police said, as he fights for his life.

A number of other people were also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Both sides of the motorway were closed to allow officers and other 999 services to attend the scene.

They have since been reopened.

A 24-year-old man “located near the motorway was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop”, said police.

“He remains in custody at this time.”

Today Det Sgt Paul Hawkins, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our investigation into this incident has continued through the night and a number of enquiries are still ongoing.

“I would also ask that anyone travelling on the motorway around the time the collision occurred and who saw what happened, has a dashcam in their vehicle or saw any of the vehicles prior to the collision occurring to come forward if you have not already done so.

“Any information you have could assist our investigation.”
