Two muggers assaulted a man as he walked home early on Saturday morning.

The attack occurred in Clifton Road, Rugby between the junctions of Winfield Street and South Street at about 4.15am.

The victim, in his early 20s, was walking home from a night out when a man walked towards him, pulled his hood up and put his face down towards the ground as he passed.

The victim then heard a running noise behind him – and as he turned, he was assaulted by two men. He struggled with them and they stole a black iPhone 5 16gb, a black Calvin wallet containing credit cards and a provisional driving licence from his pockets.

The two muggers - described as white men in their 20s, both wearing tracksuits - ran off up Clifton Road into Winfield Road when it is believed they were disturbed by a vehicle driving past, possibly a taxi.

The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment to cuts and bruises to his head and face.

Officers investigating the assault are appealing for any witnesses to the assault, including anyone who may have driven past, or who finds any discarded items that could be connected to the robbery in the street or gardens near Clifton Road.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Local Investigation at Warwickshire Police on 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
