A CARING mother is running a marathon for the first time to help raise hundreds of pounds for her friend who is fighting cancer.
Lydia Herring-Matusiak, 36, will be putting on her running shoes and joining thousands of other people to take part in the Jersey Marathon - a 26.2 mile race around the picturesque Channel Island - on October 2.
She will be joined by her sister Anna who moved from Rugby to Jersey after getting married three weeks ago.
Together they hope to raise hundreds of pounds for a childhood friend.
Lydia, of Haswell Close, Rugby, has known Nicola Vaux (nee Thompson) since she was five years old and they later worked together as physiotherapists.
Lydia said: “Nicola was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year and is currently trying to fight it. She’s doing OK at the moment and is undergoing lots of radical treatments.
“When you hear something like that about your friend you want to do everything that you possibly can to help.
“She’s paying for private treatment because when someone has a bit of medical knowledge you want to try and do all that you can.
They want to see if they can find something else that can help her.”
Lydia, who has a five-year-old daughter, has been training for the last few weeks and has already completed a 21-mile run.
She said: “I’ve done a half marathon before but that was more than five years ago before I had my daughter.
“This will be the furthest I’ve ever run. We wanted to try and do something that was going to be hard for us.
“I really hope we finish the marathon but we probably won’t get a very fast time.”
Through sponsorship Lydia is already well on her way to raising around £600 which will all go directly to help Nicola’s treatment.
She added: “It will be an emotional day.
“I’ll be really proud that I’ve ran 26 miles and done something positive for her.”
