Mobile app launched for Rugby residents to report dog mess

Rugby Borough Council has launched a mobile web app to help residents report environmental problems in their area - as well as find out about council services, contact their councillor, and see the latest information from the council.

The Rugby App, which works on all mobile platforms as well as tablets and computers, reuses data from the council’s website to provide up-to-the-minute news, events and photos.

While other councils have provided apps for their residents, Rugby Borough Council’s app is believed to be the first in the country to give residents the facility to report an environmental problem, complete with a photo and GPS coordinates. The council is able to fix or clear up most reported problems within a few hours.

Cllr Dr Mark Williams, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for sustainable environment, said: “Rugby is a relatively clean and well-kept borough, but we still have a problem with a few irresponsible people fly-tipping and not clearing up after their dog.

“We recently announced that we will recruit extra staff to enforce environmental crime and issue enforcement notices. I very much hope that residents will use this app to report incidents of littering and dog-fouling, so that we can keep the borough clean and catch the irresponsible few.”

Cllr Sally Bragg, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for Resources, said: “We have a proud track record of using new technologies: this council was the first council in Warwickshire to provide customer service via twitter and the first to have a verified twitter account, and I am pleased that we’re now able to offer the Rugby App.

“More and more of our residents are using mobile devices to access the web, and the Rugby App is designed to take advantage of the new opportunities this brings. Residents will be able to report an issue on-the-spot from their smartphone, and we will normally resolve the problem by the next working day.”

Residents can install the Rugby App by visiting in their mobile web browser and saving a shortcut to their home screen.
