More big shops set for Rugby if Elliott's Field 2 gets go-ahead

Town centre champion Rugby First has objected, hundreds of people have signed a petition against it but Elliott's Field phase two is set to get the key decision next week.

The plan for nine new shops and a restaurant on the derelict land off the Leicester Road, accessed off the Junction One traffic lights, goes before Rugby Borough Council’s planning committee next Wednesday – and is recommended for approval.

This second phase would only be able to sell bulky goods. The Advertiser understands Hammerson has got provisional deals in place with DFS, Furniture Village, Tapi, Sofology and Dwell.

There are a couple of other furniture retailers and a kitchen and bathroom name interested – all new to the borough.

The council report says the plan: “Would not have a significant adverse impact upon the vitality and viability of the town centre or planned investment in the centre.”

The recommendation puts in force restrictions on what can be sold at phase two and specifically stops the developers poaching Dunelm.

The petition has been run on behalf of The Clock Towers and other town centre businesses and asks for the application to be rejected.

Concern about Dunelm leaving the town centre was raised by Rugby First alongside a string of other issues including congestion and the need to get town centre vacancies down first.
