Rugby Free Secondary school, scheduled to open in the town in September 2016, has announced the appointment of its headteacher.

Christine Green will lead the town’s first free school.

Ms Green is currently Deputy Headteacher at Lyng Hall School in Coventry where her past roles have included Head of Drama and Music and Assistant Headteacher. She has also quality assured the Business and ICT department, Music department and Science department.

Her own teaching has been judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted on three occasions in Music, Drama and English. Christine is also an accomplished musician, having gained Grade 8, Distinction, in piano, violin and flute from the Royal College of Music.

Commenting on her recent appointment, Christine said: “I am passionate about teaching and am particularly excited by the prospect of translating the vision for Rugby Free Secondary School into reality and providing inclusive education and outcomes for all children.

“I have always had a keen interest in music and recognise the correlation between exposure to music and wider academic attainment, particularly in Maths. I enjoy engaging and motivating young people to excel and a school that focuses on STEM and Music is the ideal environment in which to do this.

“I was delighted to meet over 130 prospective parents and children at the Open Event on October 13 and I am really looking forward to meeting more families at our next Open Event on Thursday October 22.”

Lead proposer Tom Legge said: “Our selection process for an exceptional, inspirational Headteacher with a shared vision for RFSS was extremely rigorous. We are delighted that we have appointed Christine who stood out from a strong field of candidates and has an excellent track record and the perfect experience to lead RFSS.”

The Open Event will be held at Rugby Free Primary School, 1 Bailey Road, CV23 0PD between 6.30pm and 8pm on Thursday October 22.

Rugby Free Secondary School has been approved by the Department for Education to enter the pre-opening phase and will be an 11-19 school with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and an additional focus on the study of Music.

Parents can apply today directly to Rugby Free Secondary School in addition to the usual Local Authority process. Their application will not affect any other school applications made. For entry in 2016 only, children may be offered two places, one from RFSS and one through the Local Authority. Applications can be made directly to the school via
