New petition launched against Rugby Borough's green bin charge

The council tax bills came out around Rugby borough as promised last week and appeared to trigger a swift response about the charges for garden waste collections.

The council tax bills give the total amount of tax payable in 2017-18, covering the county council, borough council, parish council where appropriate and the police.

Rugby Borough Council residents got an extra element with their bills – details of the new, opt-in charge for garden waste collections in the green bins, which comes into effect from April 3.

The council took the decision to fall in line with many other councils, like neighbouring Harborough District Council, and bring in a charge for a service it is not legally obliged to offer.

It was a decision taken against a backdrop of reduced government funding to local government.

But no sooner had the bills and green bin details arrived then a new petition was launched on the change.org website, saying: ‘Cancel the Green Bin Fee and continue collecting as normal IMMEDIATELY.’

The petition will be delivered to Rugby Borough Council and Rugby MP Mark Pawsey.

It was started on Friday by Lewis Marks from Rugby, with the further words: ‘It is disgusting that Rugby Borough Council have the audacity to request payment for this “service”. A service that is already more than covered for by the extortionate Council tax paid by Rugbeians.

‘Cancel the charge and resume collections as normal immediately.’

By this evening, Sunday, it was closing in on 500 signatures with comments from around the borough in support.
