THE Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has opened an inquiry into claims of unfair competition at petrol stations.
The news was welcomed by Rugby MP Mark Pawsey who was one of 60 MPs to sign a motion recently calling on the Prime Minister to strengthen the regulation of the oil market.
Mr Pawsey said: “I am delighted that the OFT has now decided to investigate the high petrol prices. Many of my constituents have contacted me recently expressing their concern about the high cost of fuel in the UK and this is a step in the right direction.”
Mr Pawsey said he hoped that people living in Rugby will benefit from a balanced and fair approach by oil companies, following the investigation.
He added: “Petrol in Rugby is around 3p per litre more expensive than some of our surrounding areas and we need to ensure hard working families here in Rugby are not being unfairly charged for petrol”.
The OFT has asked industry, motoring groups and consumer bodies to submit information. Findings will be published in January 2013.
