A shame that pubs are not open

Easter Monday again, and almost every pub in Warwick is closing for the afternoon and evening! Why one wonders? Because it is a horse racing day, and this attracts undesirables into our town, we are told.

I am also told that pubs who want to open can’t because the police have advised them they won’t be protected from trouble! Some do open, apparently, but have to provide their own security.

It seems wrong that people can’t go out for a relaxing drink on a bank holiday for this sort of reason. It’s not the fault of Warwick Racecourse, but surely if this is true, it is disgraceful that the police can’t keep basic law and order in a normally peaceful town, and those landlords who wish to open have to provide their own heavy mob to survive.

Isn’t it ironic that, being Easter, there is a historical precedent for washing one’s hands of all responsibility for something? - John Walker, Primrose Hill, Warwick
