Competence of council called into question

Following on from the various reports on the continued saga of the traffic scheme in Jury Street Warwick, I rang Warwickshire County Council (WCC) earlier this week to find out who was going to pay for the the latest set of works “due to the specification in the design not being quite right”.

To his credit, Roger Newham rang me back within a couple of hours and when asked was honest enough to say that the contractor would not be paying as they had done the work to the specification laid down by the council. The money will either come from the pot of money given by the developers of south west Warwick for town centre improvements, which means other improvements will fall by the wayside. Alternatively the money will come from WCC funds which of course is our money. So we lose out on either town centre improvements or there will be less money to go around for already squeezed services.

Back in March, whilst the works were going on, I contacted WCC and wrote to the Courier stating that the bricks were moving on the speed table at the bottom of Church Street. I was told the movement was a “design” feature. What does all of this say about the competency of the officers in charge of this?

Our elected representatives have also been slow to highlight this. - Tony Gooch, Warwick.
