Future looks bleak for Warwick Racecourse

It has recently been announced by the BHA that Warwick Racecourse will now lose all ten flat racing fixtures which take place during the summer months.

Some time ago I predicted when Warwick District Council refused permission for Warwick Racecourse re-development and improvements which included a hotel that the racecourse would be lucky to be still open in five years.

I believe the main reason for the refusal was objections from un-elected groups within the town. The problem is Warwick has too many un-elected do-gooders as well as the elected ones who just

don’t see the full picture.

The future looks bleak, I can only see it going the same way as Hereford and Folkestone have done in recent years. Losing all the flat meetings will obviously reduce summer racing and thus have an economic effect on the town. Do the public house, hoteliers and shop owners get a proper say in these decisions or do groups such as the Warwick Society have the final say? During the winter months and jump racing the fixtures are often postponed due to the bad weather and even when racing does take place it finishes at 3.45pm during the dark winter evenings and people are less likely to stay and spend money in the town.

During the summer months and the flat racing the pubs are buzzing as are the shops before and after racing. It’s time these one-eyed people are forbidden a voice and give Warwick and Warwick Racecourse a future.
