Good to keep the flags flying

The Royal Standards, flying above the Queen Victoria pub in Leamington High Street, were a colourful and patriotic sight during the Jubilee celebrations.

Warwick District Council’s attempt to ban the flags is an example of pea-brained petty-mindedness of a bunch of busy-bodies. They describe the flags as ‘unlawful advertising’.

A flag is a symbol of nationality or identity. It isn’t, like an advertisement, an attempt to sell anything. True, the Royal Standard is usually flown when the Queen is in residence at a place or will be visiting there and it’s unlikely that Her Majesty will ever call into the Queen Vic for half a pint.

It’s equally unlikely that any member of the Royal Family would disapprove of licensee Michael Drake’s display of patriotism at a time of general celebration. Let’s be proud of our national and royal flags.

I regul;arly visit America where large numbers of private homes have flag poles in the gardens with the Stars and Stripes permanently flying. There’s been a recent blaze of red white and blue Union Jacks in Britain duing the Jubilee events. Wouldn’t it be nice to keep the flag flying more often in this country?

I suggest a Union Jack permanently flying above Warwick District Council Offices. Why not? - Dinah Smith, via email.
