High Street is unsightly and unsafe

I am responding to the recent article about the changes made to Warwick town centre. I have lived in or close to Warwick for the majority of the past 50 years and feel I must vent my concerns and anger at the manner in which the High Street has been made both unsightly and unsafe.

The new layout presents obvious dangers to younger children and also disabled groups such a blind people. I personally now have concerns about my young daughter going into town because of the lack of a crossing.

As a driver, the layout is confusing, being unclear as to who has priority. I understand and have seen evidence of a number of bollards knocked over and pedestrians just stepping out in front of vehicles.

Secondary to the safety concerns is the fact that the High Street now looks a mess and this is very sad. I have always been very proud to show visitors my home town but this appalling town centre planning has taken the gloss off it!!

Finally, it is exacerbated at this time of year by the removal of the old Christmas lights, replaced a few years ago by what look like sea horses hanging in the trees. This were a cost cutting initiative and they certainly look cheap and not very festive. I fully understand the need for cost cutting but a town like Warwick also needs to look attractive. I am sure any savings made on the lights pales into insignificance set against the money spent on making the town centre unsightly and unsafe. - David Hurst, via email.
