I believe Tesco has not helped Southam

With regard to the letter in favour of Tesco (Postbag, July 13) I feel very strongly that I must respond.

I will take you on a journey through Southam, first stop Budgen supermarket’s friendly staff. I ask Phil the manger if he could help out with Southam Carnival as it runs on a very limited budget within days. Yes was the response, and help they did.

Debbie at the dry cleaners - when I get items cleaned that are too heavy for me to carry she delivers them free - yes free - of charge to my house. Sportswear shop sells children’s school uniforms at very competitive prices. Office suppliers telephone you when your orders are in, Suzy at the florists - you can order flowers and pay much later in the week.

Pat at Essential sells ladies shoes, also clothes for the more mature lady. I myself only recently purchased a coat and two pairs of shoes, and she will also order any items for you.

The carpet shop offers a very friendly personal service. We also have two excellent coffee shops, and three public houses which also sell good coffee. The hardware shop will take items that are too heavy for you to carry to the car. Would Tesco do any of the above? I do not think they would let you have items and not pay for one to two weeks, or delivery free of charge to your house?

Tesco, well judge for yourself if it has help the job situation since their arrival. An excellent off licence has closed with the loss of six staff, they also employed teenagers of Southam. Karen would gift wrap your bottles, therefore making it more of a gift. Budgen has also loss half of its workforce, and a small gift shop has also closed.

Southam Carnival Committee recently ask Tesco if they could give a small amount of money to the procession their answer was not this year. I understand that they cannot give to every charity but five pounds would have helped.

Also I have emailed them asking if, as part of our community as they are so keen to stress, they would like to enter a float in the procession. Not even a reply, (to quote a famous man) frankly my dear I do not give a damn for Tesco). - Jacqueline Grey, Name and address supplied.
