Independent inquiry needed to find who is at fault

It beggars belief that the district council’s executive committee faces a bill of approaching £1 million to the MoD and to Racing Club Warwick for issuing two separate leases for the same property at the same time.

The report in last week’s Courier stated that a leaked report showed that members of the committee were advised that their legal position was precarious and that the MoD had a strong case.

However, it seems that the district council, although not admitting any liability, is prepared to pay compensation in order not to incur any further costs.

I cannot understand why, if the council has done nothing wrong, then why it is agreeing to pay compensation? This situation has been going on since 2008 and could have been settled much earlier.

How can the council argue that to issue two separate leases for the same property is not only wrong, but also illegal?

I know that councillors who were trustees who have asked questions about Racing Club been repeatedly called before the standards committee. Why is this?

There must be someone who is responsible for this fiasco and surely there are people within the district council who know who they are.

This will obviously fall on the taxpayer to foot the bill. Therefore, it is imperative that there is an independent inquiry to ascertain if any wrongdoing has occurred.

The spokesman for the district council said: “We genuinely wish to broker an agreement that is equitable and fair to all parties.” Says it all really.
