Meeting called over sex club opposition

The concern over the granting of a licence to a sex club continues, and rightly so. The regulatory committee hearing raised serious questions.

By whose authority were the proceedings not recorded? Why was the chairman, Cllr Norman Pratt, zealous to a fault in keeping objectors to the point, whilst allowing the applicant’s solicitor to introduce an entirely new argument (a definition of ‘close proximity’) during his summing-up? On what grounds did the committee determine that Tower Street does not constitute a residential area when all 15 addresses on the road are of private homes? Why did one very narrow definition of ‘close proximity’ prove persuasive when in common usage it also refers to a neighbourhood?

I have no confidence that the regulatory committee struck the right balance in what is a sensitive and contentious area. The policy which presumably was intended to safeguard the interests of the local community has proved inadequate, and I believe the clarity of a ‘nil cap’ on the number of SEVs in the district is now required.

To that end I invite those opposed to the presence of a sex club in the area to a meeting in the Parish Church on Wednesday May 23, 6-7pm. - Rev Christopher Wilson, All Saints’ Parish Church, Victoria Terrace, Leamington.
