No warning and no help from runners

Through your columns, may I say a big thank you to the organisers and so-called athletes who took part in the run on Newbold Comyn on Sunday, April 15.

They managed to throw an 80-year-old pensioner off his bike and into a three ft drainage ditch. Hundreds passed without one offering help. When I tried to get out of the ditch I was met with antagonistic remarks and abuse.

The only warning was 2,000 runners coming but I would suggest it was more like a stampede of animals. The organisers of the autumn cross country event have the courtesy to post notices of the event at least a week beforehand. They do not just turn up and take over the park regardless of other members of the public.

I trust when the organisers approach the district council for permission to hold another event, this experience is taken note of and the request refused.

I did two years’ National Service for what was once a green and pleasant land but now the veneer of civilisation would appear to be wafer thin. - Name and address supplied.
