Reputation of town will be tainted

I was present when the district council’s licensing committee decided to grant Shades its Sexual Entertainment Venue status.

The numerous objections put forward by local people were concerned with looking after the reputation and image of Leamington Old Town and protecting the wellbeing of those currently living, and soon to be housed, close to the club, and worshipping nearby.

These objections were dismissed.

Some good news for Old Town - there are over 500 businesses in the Brunswick area and small businesses are doing well.

The creative arches in Court Street are soon to be filled to capacity and the Althorpe Enterprise Hub is thriving, all helping to create a buzzing and positive environment. The Mary Portas initiative will help drive this along.

Royal Leamington Spa is a lovely place to live, renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture, its grand array of shops and restaurants and its wonderful parks.

But it is not just the reputation and image of the Old Town that will be affected by the second sex club- it will be the whole of Royal Leamington Spa. This will surely become tainted by the fact it has more sex clubs than neighbouring Coventry and the same number as the city of Birmingham? Is this really what people want for our town?

I am a resident in Old Town and have lived here for about 40 years. - Mo Finnesey, New Street, Leamington.
