Scout plans should be welcomed by all

Like, I suspect, many readers, whenever I read of a proposed development in the Courier I look forward confidently to the next week’s issue, which I’m sure will contain letters of protest from individuals and organisations, often with details of how to sign the petition which is being launched to try to thwart whatever is being proposed.

I must confess, however, that when I read of the Sea Scout HQ project I felt that this would be the exception to that rule and that most people would be delighted that this voluntary organisation is so successful that it is willing to undertake the provision, and maintenance, of a HQ building which will hopefully extend this success into the future.

If the Sea Scouts are prepared to take this building on it will surely be because they believe it is necessary - very few voluntary organisations willingly take on unnecessary financial burdens. Its location, adjacent to the river, is obviously ideal (the clue is in the name Sea Scouts!) and its accessibility from all parts of the town make it ideal for its members. It is difficult to think of any alternative site in Warwick that would offer equal facilities.

Could I suggest to that the management mommittee of the Friends of St Nicholas Park get in touch with the Sea Scouts, congratulate them on the success of their organisation at this time when other youth organisations are having to close down, welcome their new development and discuss with them how the Sea Scouts could help the Friends in improving the park - helping with events staged in the park perhaps, organising litter picking blitzes, or maybe they could even undertake the running of the ferry!

This is not a commercial firm seeking to exploit the park and its users; this is a youth organisation whose aims are to create good citizenship - surely it deserves to be supported positively.
