Smashing friends would be an asset

On Saturday morning I found the window in my kitchen broken: the one that faces Campion Road. It was a nuisance and a mess, but not a major problem. A friend came later and made it safe and tomorrow it will be reglazed.

Last night a young man came to my front door: “It wasn’t me who broke your window, but my friend and he’s too scared to come and see you, but he wanted you to have this money.” Folded into a piece of paper was £60.

The paper said: “Hopefully this money will find me forgiveness from you. The window was a huge mistake. If I could I would give you more money to replace it, but I’m not working yet. Very sorry about it all.”

I gave the friend £30 and said that £30 was quite enough to say sorry. That’s the kind of young man who surely should be welcomed into any company. I wish them both well and hope they’ll find the job that suits them. - Janet Alty, Lillington Road, Leamington.
