Switching off lights is dangerous

Just when I thought Warwickshire County Council could not get any worse, I have just read your article about our street lights now being turned off between midnight and 5.30am.

Have they no shame? Having wasted hundreds of thousands of pounds on ill considered and unnecessary changes to Jury Street and High Street, only to have to do it again because it didn’t work, they are now cutting back on services we actually need!

The last train from Birmingham and London doesn’t get back into Warwick until after midnight. Most restaurant and pub workers don’t finish until midnight. Cleaners, nurses, care workers etc. often walk home after midnight. Does the council expect all these people to walk home in the dark? They are putting peoples safety in jeopardy to save a few hundred grand. Perhaps they should stop wasting our money on needless traffic calming measures rather than turning off our lights?

Should someone get attacked or injured walking home in the dark, I hope that Cllr Peter Butlin and his committee will be brought to task!

If they are that worried about their carbon footprint they should try turning off the lights at Shire Hall which burn brightly every night! - Ian Weatherby-Blythe, Priory Road, Warwick.
