A long-running project to upgrade the Great Central Way with a raft of new features to benefit people and wildlife has reached the halfway point.

Rugby Rotary Club has completed two years of their four-year project to spruce up the route between Hillmorton Road and Abbey Street as part of their centenary celebrations.

The project started in 2018, when the club entered into a partnership with Rugby Borough Council and the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to manage the northern section of the way.

Two years in, more than 800 hours of work has been completed - creating glades, improving sight lines into the cuttings, building dead hedges as ‘bug hotels’ and cutting back invasive vegetation.

As part of their centenary project, new seating and artwork is proposed to be installed in the next two years to create an art trail.

Chris Worman, the Rugby council’s Parks and Grounds manager, said: “The council is very pleased to be involved in this fantastic project.

"The Rotary Club is making landscape and ecological improvements on this section of the Great Central Way which will benefit both wildlife and people."
