Rugby council has today, May 18, sent community wardens to check on the unauthorised traveller encampment at the Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre behind Whitehall Rec.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are aware of an unauthorised encampment at Whitehall Recreation Ground.

"Our Community Wardens are on site

"They will carry out welfare checks and issue legal notices as required by law.

"This is the essential first step in removing any unauthorised camp."

Travellers last set up an unauthorised encampment on the site in late January and Rugby council - which owns the land - immediately began the court process to get them evicted.

Around four days later the courts granted the council the power of eviction - but when the travellers were made aware they moved on the same morning the eviction was scheduled for.
