Warwick and Leamington COVID-19 help group signs up hundreds of community volunteers

A Warwick and Leamington group that has been set up to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic has signed up hundreds of community volunteers.

The 'Warwick and Leamington COVID-19 Help Group' has signed up more than 850 volunteers to help people with shopping, collecting medication or for people who just need a friendly voice at the other end of the phone.

The Group’s Facebook page also has more than 6,000 members with hundreds more people joining every day.

50,000 postcards with the Group’s contact details are now being distributed across Warwick and Leamington, to make sure everybody in the area knows how to get help if they need it.

Cllr Helen Adkins, who represents Leamington Willes at Warwickshire County Council and is one of the organisers, said: “We are not a professional body, but a focal point to help people in the community connect with and their neighbours.

"People are volunteering with us, are not asking for anything in return, they want to make sure nobody is left isolated or without support in difficult times.

“Where we can we are joining up with other community groups and sharing our resources, including connecting with local GPs and Pharmacies.

“We have been fortunate enough to count on the support of Warwickshire County Council and Warwick District Council, who also funded our leaflet, who are helping coordinate our efforts.

"We are also looking at ways of securing funding for the longer term to make sure we can help everyone.”
