PICTURE SPECIAL: Rugby Primary Schools Athletics event sees more than 1,400 youngsters compete

More than 1,400 children from 23 schools enjoyed the Rugby Primary Schools Athletics competition last Friday.

The new format this year enabled all the youngsters to experience Rugby’s athletics track, with Years 5 and 6 competing in the morning and Years 3 and 4 in the afternoon.

Previous years had seen smaller ‘neighbourhood’ meetings held at schools to determine who went through to the final at the track.

“Everybody was so enthusiastic and this was encapsulated in the cheering end shouting as the races took lace. The atmosphere was absolutely electric,” said joint organiser and association treasurer Angela Marsay, who hopes more schools will take part next year.

Angela is very grateful to Rugby Athletics Club’s Janet Wright and her team of helpers who ran the events, ensuring the day was a great success.

A £250 donation from a parent will fund four perpetual trophies for the top school in each age group.

Medals were presented by the mayor Cllr Richard Dodd and deputy Cllr Sally Bragg.
