Developers want to build 40 houses on land in Newton.

The estate would be near to The Leys, east of Newton Lane, and would require vehicle access on to Newton Lane.

Plans include affordable housing a children’s play area.

During the consultation period, 24 people wrote letters to the planning officer, with nearly two third of them objecting to the plans.

Some residents stated they were for the plans while others offered amendments.

The main concerns raised were: increased traffic on surrounding roads, lack of amenities in Newton to support the development, concerns over the ‘dangerous’ junction at St Thomas Cross to the south of Newton, the lack of primary school places and inadequate sewage/foul drainage.

Some residents also felt the scale of development would be out of keeping with the village.

Residents said the children’s playarea would be a welcome addition as there is a shortage of recreational areas.

It was also suggested that the developer contribute towards improvements to the St Thomas Cross junction.
