Police crackdown on fake goods destined for Wellesbourne market

COUNTERFEIT designer clothes and shoes to the value of £140,000 have been intercepted by police on their way to be sold at Wellesbourne market.

Officers stopped 75 cars on the roads around the village during an operation with the county’s Trading Standards service on Saturday to target illegal use of the roads, as well as to find fraudsters who sell fake goods at the market, which takes place at Wellesbourne airfield every Saturday and on bank holiday Mondays.

Drivers were also dealt with for various other offences, including carrying excess weight, using red diesel fuel, possessing drugs, driving without insurance, driving without a valid licnece and driving unroadworthy cars.

Acting Inspector Dean Reid said: “Our aim is to make the roads safer for the majority of law-abiding citizens by working alongside partners to identify vehicles being driven illegally and to remove unroadworthy vehicles from the countys highways.”

County councillor Richard Hobbs, responsible for policy on community protection, said: “Criminals who manufacture and sell counterfeit goods threaten our high streets and the livelihoods of genuine traders.

“I am delighted that Warwickshire Trading Standards and Warwickshire Police are working in partnership to successfully crack down on people selling fake goods across the county, protecting consumers and legitimate businesses.”
